This mythological subject is exceptional in the work of Elisabeth-Louise Vigée-LeBrun, official portraitist of Marie Antoinette. The artist made it a pretext for a charming study of a female nude, which proved so successful that she painted a second version. At the time of its exibition at the Salon of 1785, the painting belonged to the Comte de Vaudreuil.
